F1 vs F1B Mini Goldendoodle
If you’ve spent any time researching Mini Goldendoodles, you’ve seen breeders throw around terms like F1, F1B, F2, F2B, multi-gen — usually with no explanation. After 30 years of breeding, here’s the honest breakdown in plain English.
The Basic Code
The “F” stands for “filial” — basically just a generation marker. The number tells you which generation, and the “B” means “backcross” (bred back to one of the original parent breeds, usually Poodle).
- F1: First generation. Mini Poodle × Golden Retriever.
- F1B: An F1 puppy bred back to a Mini Poodle. Result: ~75% Poodle, 25% Golden.
- F2: Two F1s bred together.
- F2B: An F2 bred back to a Poodle.
- Multi-gen: F3 or beyond — doodles bred to other doodles for several generations.
F1 Mini Goldendoodle
The original recipe. 50% Golden Retriever, 50% Mini Poodle. F1s have the strongest “hybrid vigor” — they get the genetic diversity benefit of crossing two unrelated breeds.
Coat: Most often wavy. Some shedding (less than a Golden, more than a Poodle).
Best for: Families without allergy concerns who want the classic Goldendoodle look and personality.
F1B Mini Goldendoodle
Our most popular cross. 75% Mini Poodle, 25% Golden Retriever. The extra Poodle genetics make F1Bs the lowest-shedding Goldendoodle option.
Coat: Curlier than F1, often barely sheds. Needs more grooming maintenance than F1 — the curlier the coat, the more it can mat without regular brushing.
Best for: Allergy-sensitive families. People who can’t tolerate any shedding. Anyone wanting the most “hypoallergenic-leaning” doodle option.
F2 and Beyond
F2 (two F1s bred together) is genetically the most variable generation — within a single F2 litter, puppies can vary widely in coat, size, and shedding. We don’t breed F2 because the results are too unpredictable for families.
Multi-gen Goldendoodles (F3+, also called M1, M2, etc.) are bred from doodle-to-doodle crosses over multiple generations. Done well, multi-gens can have very predictable coat types.
Which Generation Is Best?
For most Michigan Doodles families, the choice comes down to:
- F1 if shedding doesn’t bother you and you want the classic teddy-bear look.
- F1B if you have allergies, are sensitive to shedding, or just prefer a curlier coat.
Both make wonderful family pets. Both are intelligent, gentle, and trainable. The “right” generation depends entirely on your household.
